What are the Applications of a Conductivity Sensor?

Conductivity sensors are measurement instruments that are used to measure the flow of electrical current in a liquid. Also known as conductivity meters, it consists of probes that assess the current that exists between electrons. The purpose is to determine the amount of electrical charge and conductivity that are present in these liquids over a specific distance.

To help you with the right application of conductivity sensors, we look at their uses and how to choose the best sensors for your next application.

How Do Conductivity Sensors Work?

A conductivity sensor measures the strength of the electrical current in a particular solution. The level of conduction depends on the number of ions that exist in the liquid. To test for conductivity, a probe is placed into the test solution. Depending on the number of ions that are present, the occurrence of a slight electric charge is measured to determine the overall conductivity of the liquid.

Liquids that contain a high number of ions will have a high level of conductance in comparison to low-ion solutions.

If you want to measure the strength or the level of conductance in a target liquid such as pure water or chemicals, the application of a conductivity meter or probe is required.

What is the Best Conductivity Probe?

Conductivity meters, probes, or sensors are available in different types based on the industry and operation. Some of the industries that use these sensors include aquaculture and freshwater applications, hydroponics, various types of fieldwork, and agriculture. It is most commonly used in industrial water treatments and purification to determine the safety of the water for drinking and sanitation purposes.

The application of conductivity probes is important in obtaining accurate readings when you need to measure the presence of ions or current in a liquid solution. These types of probes and sensors do not provide measurement for the number of ions that exist but will only tell you if a current is present and its overall strength.

One of the most reliable conductivity sensors available is the Mettler conductivity sensor. The Mettler Toledo meters are used in the measurement of pure water and chemical processing. The role of these probes is to determine the reliability and accuracy of these processes and manufacture to remain compliant with manufacturing standards.

Specialized suppliers of measurement instruments can determine the right type of tool for your needs. From conductivity sensors to devices such as R Stahl Barriers for safe circuit connections, you can find trusted products to suit your application and industry.
